I have to start off with "I hate the song Cha-Cha-Cha". Never saw the charm. Hated it then, still hate it now. It’s a travesty that it prevented "Desire" from being the year end No. 1 as well!
We saw a different version where Naoko made a mistake or something like that, or was that with Anri instead of Ann Lewis.
Anyway, Ann Lewis debut was in 1971 with the song 「白い週末」。She struck fame with her song 「Goodbye My Love」, which you will definitely remember because I think Teresa sang the Chinese version – 再见吧!我的爱人。
Everyone was singing everyone’s song then it was difficult to remember and I would have been too young, but I remember Teresa singing it. As I grew older and heard Teresa’s version for the first time, I thought "好土哦!", but then Kyon2 covered it in her cover album 「N°17」 in an acapella version, and I loved it. It was a rediscovery that good songs can stand the test of time. I love Ann’s original and her revamped slightly rockier edge ’91 version found in her 「Womanism」 series.
There were one minor hit after that and many misses, until the now married 三浦百恵 collaborated with 沢田研二 to write her biggest hit to date 「ラ・セゾン」, which is where she started to venture into a rocker sound. Her most memorable hit though should be 「六本木心中」 which sold well, and garnered her a few awards. 「あゝ無情」 and 「Woman」 are my other favourites of hers.
I am not a huge fan but I do like her funky soul. If you wish to know more, I will be happy to introduce some of her music when you are in Singapore (hope you get the hint).
What an odd combination! Don’t know much about Ann Lewis – she’s some sort of rock singer from the later 70′s/early 80′s, right?
