This is an article from ZAK ZAK that says that there was meant to be an interview with Akina but she was so late that they were wondering if they should proceed without her appearance. It does mention that she just came back from Tasmania.
I don’t get Exile as well. I was watching Koukaku (finally) the other day and I found the song terribly boring, and I do not get why the Japanese are so crazy over such amateurs, and that includes SMAP, who gave positively the worst performance of the night.
The 2nd day of the 23rd Gold Disc Awards at the Tokyo International Forum. Artist Nakamori Akina was found to be a bit tardy.
As the first person to receive the Golden Disc Award, Nakamori Akina was to have an interview with the chairman before hand. Unfortunately even as the awards were being handed out, Akina was not to be found. “Did she just cancel last minute?”
The executive producers answered saying “Her appearance has been canceled”
Finally at the end when “crappy” boy band EXILE walked onto the stage, Akina made it in the nick of time explaining that she just returned from Tasmania. She handed “horrible” EXILE vocalist ATSUSHI a bouquet of flowers and said “I always watch you guys and I think this award is a very appropriate”
Just play it backwards and it would look like she won the whole thing and went off with the bouquet like the good ol’days.
EXILE? Ergh…
