DIVA Single

Empress1Empress3

Universal Japan is definitely utilising the Akina e-newsletter well. Not only did it preview the DIVA “chorus” clip that we first shared, but the latest reports Akina’s Yokohoma Empress concert with three photos. (Someone else can translate the content)

Empress2

The main feature this time though is the official announcement of the single and the release of the cover. It is still an illustration (consistency with album art) but I like this much better. There are three songs in the CD single, making it her second since 「Days」 to contain three songs.

Diva Single

Now that she has turned a new chapter in her career with 「DIVA」, let’s pray that the video will live up to the new sound. Dare I hope? I don’t even know what to think. I am only praying that she places it all in the confidence of a foreigner, like she did for the album.

A Diva Week

concertshots

hey guys, here are some shots i’ve taken on my iPhone. alot of these were taken discreetly (i was either at the concert venue, or cd stores) so please pardon the quality. i hope this helps you to “visualise” a lil bit of the action going on around Diva’s release, and the Empress Live concert.

Diva Daily Oricon Chart

after dropping to 21st, then 29th from its debut position of 18th, Diva is back up at 14th spot!! =) congratulations! i hope it appears in Top 15 in the weekly charts!

Folk Night – What a Scam!!!

dear fans, i am writing with utter exasperation, disappointment, but mostly anger, that hardcore fans have been robbed of their trust, goodwill and support tonight.

tonight’s show was marketed as “Folk Night” and positioned as an additional special show for the “Empress Live” concert, after the concert was sold out. to get tickets to tonight’s show, you need to get the Folk 2 Limited Edition CD. it was supposed to have a slightly different song set, or additional songs. but lo and behold – it was the EXACT SAME FUCKING SHOW.

when the sequence of the songs was the same, we felt something was strange (even tho I had earlier jokingly offered the possibility of Akina removing “Woman” and “I Hope So” to make it a “Folk Night” it was meant to be, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt, and didn’t know my nightmare would materialise). then when she did her final set combo of “I Love You”, “Koi”, and “I Hope So”, I thought maybe she’ll do an encore set (which she didn’t on all other shows)…

and then the house lights came on, and the post-show announcement came on the system. i was left dumbfounded, ajar mouth included… my head shaking in disbelief.

this feeling of getting shortchanged is by now no longer a stranger – what with half-hearted limited edition releases containing half-fucked lame studio recording footages as bonus DVD material, more best compilations than you can count with 2 hands, 5 different coloured versions of the same album cover, Destination concert tour pamphlet marketed as ”世界最強“ which turned out to be sucha mega flop, I can go on with more examples… and don’t even get me started with rehashed, recycled costumes! but tonight, tonight takes the cake outta everything else. it’s the ultimate cream pie smashed flat on her very own fans’faces.

granted, Akina may not be involved in the marketing of the concert and could in an extreme case of being the ill-informed, uninvolved, devil-may-care-i-just-wanna-sing-my-songs-dun-bother-me-with-anything-else (which explains fuglier than fug album cover art of late) singer, not aware her company had so unethically marketed an additional “Folk Night” show to lure naive fans into spending more of their hard-earned money, waste their time/effort, and the worst of all crimes – squander their support and good faith. But that is no excuse. can she wake up her idea?

i’ve had an O.D of Akina, having watched 3 shows of her gluing her butt to her stool. actually, I had contemplated on not going for the 3rd show to listen to “DIVA” in the hotel instead. that was how maxed out I was with her angst-ridden, tortured, pained face she dishes out at will every night. i pay to get entertained, damnit. but now, i like her a lil less each time i see her perform live.

i’m not sure if i’ll be doing her career further harm by airing my disgust here. but i know many fans who are victims of tonight’s wicked manipulative marketing ploy will be so ever-forgiving, and crawl back into their own worlds in denial, and sleep it off. but i won’t take this laying down. unethical, irresponsible corporate behaviour needs to be exposed and addressed.

you can only cry wolf so many times before eventually, no one will come to your rescue, even at your most genuine, neediest time. i for one, will take everything with a pinch of salt henceforth. “Folk Night”? my arse.

please, don’t abuse your fans like this (whatever number of fans you have left anyway). we deserve better. be the Legend of Diva for the right reasons.

Empress @ 横浜 – review

a review of the concert so far….

私は風「INTRO」

The intro theme is the same as the Empress Live @ Club Ex in 2005. Strong instrumentation with a lead-in to the next song.

私は泣いています

A slightly [upbeat] track to start off the concert. Akina sang this as it was like in the album, relaxed and confident.

学生街の喫茶店

I would consider this song as one of the better performed songs in the concert so far. A good song to display Akina’s singing skills…VIBRATO! She was at ease to project her vocals for this song and appears to be enjoying this track. Frankly, this song has never been my liking until Akina covered it =)

Introduced that this concert is a continuation of the Club EX Empress Live in 2005 and this concert is one event of the 150 years anniversary of Yokohama port and World Children Summit (?? not sure if I got this right)@ Yokohama.
Also, Akina introduced about the 2 Folk Albums that were released.

旅の宿

Again, sounded like the album. There were minimal live instrumentation used. Mostly synthesized music.

心もよう

I have mixed feelings about this Yosui track. I never liked it even with Akina’s version. Nevertheless, I guess that Akina is really a true fan of Yosui and this song was okay. =)

無縁坂

A track from Folk 1. Sings about relationship between child and mother. A very sad song and I do observe that Akina becomes emotional when she performed this track. I guess it brings back a lot of memories with her mum. Definitely one of the songs in the concert that moved me.

シクラメンのかほり

I do like this track quite a bit even from the album. It is slow moving and not easy to digest. However, it is a very beautiful song to enjoy.
However, at a concert venue, this is quite a killer for fans who we are watching multiple shows and it is very difficult to keep concentration in listening as it is too slow….

Continues to introduce the above few tracks from Folk albums. Spoke about the recently released new Original album, DIVA. Briefly described the album as a varied album with different genres of songs…mostly dance-able and for fans who are shy/introvert, Akina encourages to dance to the song @ home while listening!! She also mentioned that she is confident of this album. In addition, DIVA will released as a single-cut with a single-version (different from the album version and remix).

ダンスはうまく踊れない

For those who have watched NHK SONGS, this song was as enjoyable as the TV performance. Another Yosui composition.

Woman “Wの悲劇”より

For myself, this is definitely the HIGHLIGHT for the entire concert. A track that is not released in any of the cover album and a 素敵 Yuming composition. Akina’s version was very moving and emotional ( she broke down during the first show of 8/26 after completing the song). Her vocal range for this song was quite high but comfortable. Very relaxed performance that she did not look at the music stand for lyrics. I guess she must have really liked this track a lot. I am very glad that she did so well for this track. I am always looking forward to this track for each night that we are watching the concert. Can’t wait for the concert DVD to be released (there was DVD recording on 8/25).

ベルベット・イースター

Similar to SONGS performance. For the 8/26 performance, she could not start the first few verses of this song as she was too affected after the singing the previous song. This is exactly what I love about Akina. She injects real feelings in to singing her song, without holding back her emotions. She is definitely one singer that can move you to tears with her. I am sure many fans will not oppose to my comment.
Again, another Yuming composition and she had an enjoyable time singing this song as well.

Akina spoke about her liking for Yosui and Yuming compositions. These were the music that she was crazy about during her secondary school days. Too many memories them and in particular, she mentioned that she was so much a fan of Yosui that she felt so lucky that she had a chance to sing Kazari that was composed by Yosui for her. Akina also mentioned that she will be appearing on TV again in November, and most likely to be SONGS. It will not be a LIVE performance though (she was implying about another show….). Nevertheless, she mentioned that there are still the usual Dinner Shows to look forward to and this year, a Fanclub-limited Countdown show.

悪女

One of my best-liked song from FOLKS 2. Singing style was like SONGS. Good to hear it LIVE! =)

22才の別れ

This must be the most “uninteresting” song of the entire concert for me. Never like this track…

雨の物語

Good choice of song for this one and was okay=)

I LOVE YOU

I had quite a bit of expectation for this live performance on this song. However, when Akina gets emotional in singing this track, she bent over and hid her face behind the lyrics stand and we were unable to see her singing properly…it is quite a pity despite the vocals came very well and emotional. Again, she broke down after this track. I guess it is not easy to maintain the emotions each time she sings this.

A “brighter” song to end this section. Stage lighting was bright shininig on Akina and we could see her very clearly singing this track. Alsio, she tidied her hair a little before starting the song. Akina is really very beautiful in her dress and current hairstlye. Like the Yosui and Yuming compositions, she was very comfortable singing this song with her smile like in SONGS.

“It has come to the end of the concert and I would like to end off with this original track release previously. Hope all of you had a great time during this concert and the songs performed brought back good memories for all of you. Please listen to I HOPE SO. Thank you for accompanying me throughout this concert.”

I hope so

Another splendid performance in this concert. Definitely a lot more energy and Akina could project her vocals to reach the range and the chorus. A wonderful song to end of the concert that leaves me yearning for more of her original song performances (as compared to singing cover songs). I am glad that she is performed this song as a surprise.

COMMENT : we are left with 2 more shows (today and tomorrow) and hopefully, there will be more surprises for the tomorrow show as it claims to be a limited 1 night special. DIVA remixes were played before the concert starts in the hall. =)

DIVA Single + Another NHK Appearance

At the concert, Akina mentioned that her forthcoming single in September will be DIVA, confirming earlier projections. it’ll be a different version from the album version and the remix version available on the bonus disc.

in other news, Akina will be appearing on NHK again later this year on a variety programme. we’re guessing it’ll be NHK Songs Premium.

there will also be a New Year Countdown Show.

DIVA – A Quick & Dirty Review from Tokyo!

Dear Akina fans, I’m somewhere between a state of hyperventilation, and tearing right now. Just finished spinning DIVA in the hotel room. with me are: Jamez, Kenji, Ranbi (who picked up the CD early in the morning). all i can say is – get ready to be FLOORED by this album. this is the Akina we’ve all been waiting for. pining for. hoping for – this is the BEST FREAKIN’DANCE ALBUM from her ever. to sum it up in 3 words, so aptly put across by Jamez – The Diva Awakes.

i recount the number of conversations i’ve had with Kenji when blasting Namie Amuro albums in the car lamenting the fact that Akina should do a kickass dance album, with a current sound, as i believe with my heart and soul that she still has it in her to deliver something like that. i mean, she’s the original J-pop Dance Diva, no?

i can’t remember the last album from her which has brought me to sucha level of euphoria. Femme Fatale? no. Stock? no. Destination? well, i love that album of hers, but it’s not even close.

it’s a totally different sound. She HAS NOT done this sound before. No other previous album comes close. Her singing technique (not a single strained note in this album i swear – she sings with her normal register, very low but extremely comfortable range), diction, sound, English pronunciation (has she been going for English lessons?) – all changed. it’s like rediscovering a brand new Akina all over again.

from the get-go, you’ll be surprised track after track. 10 songs, not a single one you’d skip. not a single favourite you can pick out immediately. throw in 2 kickass, mindblowing remixes (they can go straight into any clubs with no further work required!! DIVA Michitomo Remix stands at a whopping 7:44 minutes and is the BEST REMIX in the entire Akina career, dripping with thumpa-thumpa finesse; Heartache Michitomo Remix is actually a remix of HEARTBREAK with different lyrics infused with a refreshing clash of chinese strings Guzheng) – you have one heckavu statement. the DIVA is back alright. this is a wonderful juxtaposition against Mood Kayou, and Folk Songs 2. this girl’s got range.

suffice to say, i’d spun Destination in my car for a good half a year before taking it outta my CD player. gawd knows how long DIVA is staying in it this time.

i’ll give a track  by track review later, together with the concert review, this evening. we’re running outta time here, but I wanted to share this quick and dirty review with you guys rightaway!!!!

Update:

Ok guys, sorry this took longer than expected. I had wanted to upload this before we left for the concert, but was experiencing stubborn problems with my application. anyhowzah, here’s a sampling of some highlights from DIVA!!! bon appetite! and please, you’ve gotta turn up your speakers, k? =)

DIVA Cover Art

diva1

diva2

hey guys, i’ve managed to locate 2 higher resolution images of the cover art for DIVA. this gives a clearer idea what those “wavey” bits are. not 100% sure but the other bit could be her hand or something. as the album may carry a more foreign/western sound, perhaps the idea is to create a “westernised” version of Akina. still doesn’t quite look like her, and the shading around the nose makes it crooked, or is it just me?
