北ウィング is a mystery

Call it a mystery or pure bad luck, but due to inexplicable circumstances (or someone just way too keen), 北ウィング lost out on the No. 1 coveted spot on the Oricon Chart in January 1984.

According to this site, if one observed the chart for 1984.1.9, which collects sales data for the week ending 1983.12.26, 北ウィング makes its debut on No.2 on its first week on the Oricon chart, selling 8.5万枚, losing out to eventual 1984 sales champ もしも明日か。。。by わらべ. Call it bad luck.

Chart 1984.1.19

If you look at the chart closely, you will notice that 北ウィング is the only single released on 1984.1.1.

Now, let’s look at the next chart, which collects sales data for following two weeks (as Japan shuts down for the New Year). You will see that 北ウィング sold more (two week total) at 12.3万枚, but still insufficient to defeat the champ.

Chart 1984.1.16

However, look at the sole new entry that week -クライマックス御一緒に by あんみつ姫 (小泉今日子). The release date for that single is the same as 北ウィング (1984.1.1), which means that 北ウィング’s entry in the previous chart was premature.

Somehow, Oricon had calculated 北ウィング’s sales in advance and charted it early, causing 北ウィング to miss out on the coveted No. 1 spot, which it would have because its combined sales would have been 20.8万枚, eclipsing もしも明日か。。。and entering at No.1.

What caused this? An over eager staff member releasing the single for sales earlier and Oricon punishing Warner? An over zealous Seiko fan who was working at Oricon? I guess we will never know. It’s unfair but there’s nothing we can do to correct “history”.

The only saving grace is that 北ウィング topped ザ・ベストテン chart for 5 weeks, which is a more definitive chart of sorts because it tabulated airplay requests as well.

All quiet on the Akina front. So what do we do? Remixes of course! LOL. The track will be available for download on my personal blog. For a limited time only.

DIVA Single

41AxXvyRLYL

DIVA single cut has been released. under the absence of promotion, the single debut outside of Oricon Singles Daily Top 50 on 21st September. but it ranked 46 on 22nd September. i thought the official release date was 23rd? haven’t heard the tracks, but apparently, the single version has a different treatment for the Intro, and the bit where she shouted. other than that, other bits “stayed the same”. “Heartache” apparently assumed “Heartbreak’s” arrangement wholesale (come on, dare we honestly expect anything else?), and “I Hope So” was a remastered version with clearer vocals.

Updates:

Just received the single. quick notes:

1. “DIVA” single cut basically differs in the Intro (about 1 min 3 seconds of build up, which was excellent, and she shd have continued in that direction using that sound rendering it a different style altogether, but then she did the usual cut and paste type of remix circa “Meu Amore”, “Babylon”, “Appetite” album versions); the Bridge (where she shouted – it’s been given a slight effects treatment); Ending (so minimal, you’ll miss it if you do not pay close attention). The bass has also been pushed upwards. the tracks in this single are bassier than the album recordings.

2. Heartache Original Version – this is largely “Heartbreak” arrangement wise. no “Cher” vocal treatments. so you hear her actual voice as it, in a leisurely mode. there are slightly different effects (cosmic noises, and a male robotic background vocals) throughout the song. I still prefer the Michitomo remix as it’s alot more frantic, which i think the song was more suited to be.

3. I Hope So – now, we know this has been marketed as “remastered”. but i personally think she resang the song. vocals are alot better, more solid, more control, alot less strained and you won’t visualise a pained look hanging on her when recording the song.

I quite approve of the layout and choice of colours of the lyrics leaflet inside (quite “Crimson” as there were dashes of pink).

Now, for the dismal news:

Weekly Oricon Chart – 50. Sales – 1220 copies.

Now go cry.

DIVA Single

Empress1Empress3

Universal Japan is definitely utilising the Akina e-newsletter well. Not only did it preview the DIVA “chorus” clip that we first shared, but the latest reports Akina’s Yokohoma Empress concert with three photos. (Someone else can translate the content)

Empress2

The main feature this time though is the official announcement of the single and the release of the cover. It is still an illustration (consistency with album art) but I like this much better. There are three songs in the CD single, making it her second since 「Days」 to contain three songs.

Diva Single

Now that she has turned a new chapter in her career with 「DIVA」, let’s pray that the video will live up to the new sound. Dare I hope? I don’t even know what to think. I am only praying that she places it all in the confidence of a foreigner, like she did for the album.

DIVA Single + Another NHK Appearance

At the concert, Akina mentioned that her forthcoming single in September will be DIVA, confirming earlier projections. it’ll be a different version from the album version and the remix version available on the bonus disc.

in other news, Akina will be appearing on NHK again later this year on a variety programme. we’re guessing it’ll be NHK Songs Premium.

there will also be a New Year Countdown Show.

BREAKING NEWS: NEW MAXI SINGLE!!!!!!!

This is too good to be true!! 3 years after “Hanayo Odore”, Akina will be releasing a Maxi-Cut Single on 23rd September. Not sure which song it’s going to be. But I reckon it’ll be HEARTACHE (remix version will be on Limited Edition Press)

Update:
Single will be “DIVA” (Single Version) – Cool bananas! That means we’ll get 3 different versions of “DIVA”. I think B-side will be “Heartache” then. =)

赤い鳥逃げた – from the Complete Singles Collection notes

akaitori

The below comments are read from the recent release of the Complete Singles Collection notes:

As we all fans know, 赤い鳥逃げた is the 12 inch single released after ミ・アモレ, with different lyrics.

However, I guess not many of us may know that actually, when the lyricist 康珍 化 first received the melody from the composer 松岡直也, the initial lyrics composed was actually 赤い鳥逃げた instead of ミ・アモレ.

After reviewing the initial lyrics of  赤い鳥逃げた, 康珍 化 felt that the lyrics was quite ‘weak’ for a single release. Hence, he re-wrote the lyrics based on the stage of the  Carnival in Rio (Brazil) – thus the birth to the lyrics of ミ・アモレ.

Quite an interesting discovery for me, as a big fan of ミ・アモレ〜! =)

It’s Brand New Day (It’s All Inside Your Soul Mix)

itsbrandnewday

i’ve been trying to turn one blind eye to the recent slew of news cos i’ve learnt not to get my hopes too high these days. on certain days, i feel like i’m ready to throw in the towel and give up on her. anywayz, what i did was i went on a detox programme. i heard NOTHING from her for about a month.

and then my iTunes decided to somehow serendipitously sneak in It’s Brand New Day into my playlist yesterday. and then i was transported rightaway to many years ago, when the song’s release coincided with one of my bleakest moments in life. it gave me strength for 2 weeks when i relentlessly just listened to it OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER again. i basically listened to nothing else, ok? the song spoke to me in mysterious ways. although i didn’t know what the heck she was singing about, but i knew Akina was emerging from the darkest of clouds in her own life then, and the parallelism was enough to make it better – misery does love company. when i eventually made my decision and moved on after about a week of wretched pain, the song became this beacon of light which filled me with an overwhelming sense of relief and hopefulness. and i listened to it non-stop for another week. hahaha. i think i drove the people around me mad.

so that’s my love story with this song. i still cringe at the embarrassing half-cooked super bad grammar of the song title, but moving on, hahaha, so, we decided to rework this track. and Djan said “of all the songs you’ve sent me, this is the first one with soul.”

LOL. and thence the title of this remix. enjoy the remix at VAMP NETWORK! (would be nice to get some comments/encouragement/thankyoos. sometimes i think nobody cares about the remixes. like the last one, like WTF? only one comment!?!!?!?)

p/s: AND YES!!! CONCERT IN AUGUST!!! <— now i am officially excited.

TATTOO (SHOW ME UR REAL LUV REMIX)

IMTS – I Mixed “The Shock” 2008

imts2008

Just finished the cover artwork. Video coming soon. =)

Here’s the full version of I Missed “The Shock” – the very first remix we half-released to kickstart the underground project. It’s one of my personal favourite remixes (and of course the original song remains one of the greatest works from the 80s which never fail to make me go “how on earth did they come up with a song this kickass!?!?” Enjoy, and remember to BLAST THIS! Jen, hope this makes your day. ;) )
