Sing Sing Singles (Part 2) – Answers

Okay. Sorry for the length of this post …

The answers to the questions:

(1) Till today, Akina has 21 No. 1 singles in total. Name the 3 singles that stayed at No. 1 for the longest period of time.

Title

Weeks at No. 1

1/2の神話

6 consecutive weeks

セカンド・ラブ

6 non-consecutive weeks

サザン・ウインド

3 consecutive weeks

(2) A song’s popularity can be judged not only by the number of weeks it topped the charts (or number of total weeks), but more powerfully, its return to the top after relinquishing the pole position. Which 3 Akina singles returned to the No. 1 spot after giving up the No. 1 crown?

Chart Action

セカンド・ラブ

6 weeks

Debut at No. 2. Jumped to No. 1 for 3 weeks. Fell to No. 2 for 3 weeks (No. 1 was 3 年目の浮気 / ヒロシ&キーボー ), and then went back to No. 1 for 3 weeks.

十戒( 1984 )

2 weeks

Debut at No. 1. Went to No. 2 for 2 weeks (losing to ピンクのモーツァルト / 松田聖子 & 顔に書いた恋愛小説(ロマンス) / 田原俊彦 ), and then back to No. 1 for 1 week.

Dear Friend

2 weeks

Debut at No. 1. Fell to No. 3 on the 2nd week, jumped back to No. 1 on 3rd week.

(3) To add on the degree of difficulty, how does she compare with Momoe and Seiko in terms of number of weeks at No. 1?

There are different ways to answer this question. If one looked at total combined weeks at No. 1, Seiko is the winner because she has 25 singles that went to No. 1. However, if we looked just at the No. 1 number of weeks at No. 1, then the winner is … Momoe Yamaguchi

(A) 山口百恵 Momoe Yamaguchi

Hamu has this partly correct. Though she has only 4 No. 1 singles, her singles stayed longer at No. 1. This is probably due to the lack of competition during those days and she had more Top 5 hits than any other singer during her time, which is why she is the legend she is today.

I believe all her No.1s spent consecutive weeks at the pole position, though I don’t have the information to support this.

(B) 中森明菜 ( Akina Nakamori)

As promised, I will reveal all I know about Akina’s singles, the no. of weeks they spent at No. 1 and possibly the first week sales figures, if I can remember them. Most of them are just approximate figures.

I thought I might present it in chronological order for her singles for clarity:

I guess we all know the rest. Akina was rather unlucky in 1986 because that was the year when there were 48 No. 1s (most likely to be the most No.1s in a single year in Oricon’s history). There were おニャン子クラブ ( Onyanko Club) members who released new individual singles that dominated the No. 1 position every week.

In 1987 when they ran a history chart for achievements, the singer with the most singles that debut at No.1 was Akina (with 14 singles then).

(C) 松田聖子 (Seiko Matsuda)

I decided to present it in chronological order here as well, so that you can look at it easier.

Though I do not have the facts to confirm, it is very likely that Seiko holds the record for most number of weeks in between it’s No. 1 reign. ガラスの林檎 /SWEET MEMORIES entered the charts at No. 1 on 15.8.1983 and only returned to No. 1 11 weeks later on 31.10.1983. There were 4 No. 1s in between including 禁区 . This is likely because “Sweet Memories” which was used as a CM song for a camera ad starring Seiko started getting major airplay and pushed the single back to No. 1. Seiko also holds the record consecutive No.1 s, because the week after ガラスの林檎 /SWEET MEMORIES went back to No. 1, 瞳はダイアモンド debut at No. 1, making her the only singer to dominate two weeks at the top with different songs.

Well, another "history" lesson on statistics! Fun pushing.

Hope you enjoyed the answers. If there is any information you would like to add or ask, we would like to hear from you …

Akina fanboy since 14. Still undecided which are his top ten favourite Akina tracks as it's mission impossible. Digs "Everlasting Love" a whole lot more than the average Akina fan.

  1. Jamez, thanks for the comprehensive stats! It’s interesting to see how Akina’s singles faired and to compare her numbers with Seiko’s and Momoe’s.

  2. Thanks Jamez for the comprehensive stats! I’m surprised that “難破船” hit no1 for one week only….
Now l@@king forward to your album quiz ;-)p

  3. You are both most welcome. I had to enlist Danny’s help with some of the formating because there was too much information and it took me like 3 hours to compile. Glad you all appreciated it. 😉

Even though Akina might not have as many No.1s as Seiko or longest stay at No. 1 as Momoe, it is very very important to note that Akina is still No. 1 in the number of years an artiste has sold the most records in history. Momoe has never dominated and Seiko only took out the Top position in 1984, when Akina technically only had 3 singles to count for because Kazari was released one week before the year end chart results were accumulated.

Akina dominated in 1983, 1985-87, making her the only artiste to top for 4 years. Ayu and Yuming are 2nd with 3 years each. Judging from Ayu’s recent single sales being stuck at 30-35 万枚, it’s unlikely she will equal let alone top Akina’s glory.

As for “難破船”, she was unlucky because she narrowly lost out to “Catch Me” by 中山美穂 the next week, who charted her first No. 1 with around 6 万枚. After that it was “Remember” by 風間三姉妹 (which stars 浅香唯) and then 小泉今日子’s “キスを止めないで”. Her sales were naturally decreasing by 1 万枚 every week but she did maintain very strong 2-3 万枚 sales for many weeks.

Usually Kohaku helps with the sales too, as we can all see with I Missed “The Shock”, who enjoyed a slight revival after her performance in Kohaku.
