Oricon Weekly Chart

23. 花よ踊れ 中森明菜 5621 copies

Can’t help feeling a little disappointed, but I guess this means that it is her best selling single since「Days」, which is also an ending theme. I believe that the exposure from the drama is not high because it is not rating very well. The fact that Akina has not appeared on TV variety programs to sing the song might have some effect too. On a brighter note, it’s her highest charting single since 「The Heat」, and it’s not easy for singers in their 25th year to have good results, so I guess we should all rejoice!

There is also still the PV to look forward to, which could lead to more promotion. Like most Japanese fans, I also wonder if Akina will appear on the last episode of 「プリマダム」, which is going to be acted live and screened on the 21st June. It is a definitely going to be a talking point as the day draws nearer, and if Akina is not going to die in the series soon, then maybe there is a chance. However, since she does have stage fright and is not primarily an actress, it may not eventuate. Still, it would be nice if she came back as a spirit to watch Kuroki or her son dance, and then proceed to sing the ending theme song live!!

Akina fanboy since 14. Still undecided which are his top ten favourite Akina tracks as it's mission impossible. Digs "Everlasting Love" a whole lot more than the average Akina fan.

  1. It’s a shame. Based on the daily chart positions for the first few days, I was sure it would go top 20. Still, No. 23 is not that bad – I mean, look at her peers, where are they now? Even Seiko’s latest single didn’t fare so well. At the end of the day, it’s the music that really matters. Of course, if it did well on the charts, that would be icing on the cake. Now, bring on the new album!

  2. Considering how Akina’s other recent singles fared, Hanayo Odore is doing very well!

I think we need to have realistic expectations.

So, "Primadam" is not doing that well in the ratings? I guess Japanese female viewers have become more descriminating. Perhaps the series lacks sufficient depth to suit them?

  3. You are right, CJ. With new reports of Koda Kumi achieving 1 million downloads for her new single, Oricon would have to follow in Billboard’s lead someday to include downloads in their charts as well.

I guess there must be new Akina fans who just want to download the single considering the cover is not a motivation to buy the actual single.

As for Primadam, the viewership is hovering around the 10 – 12% mark, which is not high. It did not feature well in the surveys conducted by Oricon on satisfaction rates of Spring dramas as well. Even though it has been well received by fans of this site, two VAMPires have commented that the writing is not very good, and that they would probably not watch it if it didn’t star Akina.
