第57回紅白歌合戦

For those who are still interested, the list of singers will be released today.

Personally, like Akina, I don’t think she will be invited because there are no rumours this year, unlike last, that she will. Moreover, I felt that since NHK dropped her last year admist all the publicity and just made a silly remark that she declined, I don’t think her chances are here.

Hence, my surprise today, which will please 乱火 that 德永英明 is likely to be invited, after his reasons for "pulling out" last year was the same that NHK gave for Akina. I guess his "Vocalist" success and his single 「Happiness」 hitting the Top 10, inspite of the super low first week sales (5600 copies or so). 「花よ踊れ」would have also made the Top 15 for that week too (instead of 23).

I don’t look foward to 紅白 as much as I used to because my favourite singers are no longer performing and the newer singers all lack the X-factor to interest me. Camaderie is also missing in the program which was a huge selling/watching point for me in the 70s/80s. Then, it was like Japanese equivalent of Madonna singing with Mariah. Not gonna happen now.

If the same report is true, then I have one very good reason to watch 紅白 this year. One of my other favourite singers 今井美樹 (Akina’s too), is remoured to be appearing for the first time with her husband 布袋寅泰. I hope she will sing「PRIDE」, which is one of her many wonderful hits, or a medley. She doesn’t dance but she has got such a soothing and lovely voice and presence. If anyone caught her singing live, it is mesmerising when she sings her ballads.

 Anyway, here is the article:

Akina fanboy since 14. Still undecided which are his top ten favourite Akina tracks as it's mission impossible. Digs "Everlasting Love" a whole lot more than the average Akina fan.

  1. really, i dont mean to be offensive. just personally i never know how to appreciate imai’s voice. kinda too artificial for me. i’m more attracted to yusa mimori’s kind of voice. well, again, it’s very personal. and i know imai’s got a huge fan base, and i actually quite like her latest single ‘年下の水夫’. 🙂

  2. and i think if 今井美樹 is singing with 山下久美子(布袋寅泰’s ex-wife), it’ll probably have more impact, lol.

  3. I can understand how some people might find Miki’s voice a little boring (or sleepy as my friend puts it) and I have never heard of Yusa Mimori, so I can’t comment.

What I like about Miki is that she is not one of those silly squeaky voices that is so common in JPop and she does have some very good songs, so she stands out. Moreover, a good singer is usually distinctive. A Miki voice will never be mistaken for Seiko or anyone else, so I guess she is unique in that sense.

  4. I’m a big fan of Miki Imai as well. She has a truely clear voice. I’m impressed by her ability to keep her voice after all these years. She has many great songs. Pride is also my all time favorite.

There were many times that I wish Akina could have gotten as great songs as Imani’s. Akina should date a great song writer like Tomayasu Hotei. I love his ‘Rose and Rain’.

  5. Imai Miki’s Piece of My Wish is really nice. i haven’t got all her stuff, but i like her calming, laid back voice. plus she’s very classy! sometimes i look at her and wish that Akina can age as well as her! but she did evade tax sometime ago rite?

yes! i was Everlasting Love (Sheltering Sky Remix). LOL.

  6. Danny,
It’s funny that I sometime felt the same way. There is time when I wish Akina could have been the same path as Imai Miki.
However, I wonder if I will still like Akina as much if she did go the same path as Imai Miki.
It’s hard to admit but I think Akina’s drama did play a big role in my fanatic at the beginning. Akina’s drama made me stand on her side and cheered for her and wanted to go through her difficulty with her.
    Patrick

  7. I’m so out of it. I haven’t kept up on any Japanese or Chinese singers over the last 5 years save Akina. Thanks everyone for sharing.
