  1. I do like the idea of “upside-down”. However, i do have mixed feelings about the clothes. The pose and the poster itself is retro and has character. But, I am not sure if I can accept the clothes…LOL

  2. I love it. I love the concept, the cloth, and the make up. It’s not pretty pretty type but it’s cool high fanshion style. The only comment might be the upside down is a little extreme. It might be better off with 90 degree instead of 180. I wish I could be there. I hope all vampiers will give us a full report on the concert.

  3. This is ABSOFREAKINGLUTELY FIERCE! Why oh why didn’t she use this for the actual CD cover????? Or perhaps on the limited edition? Such a waste! This is totally in line with the AGoGo era. For once, she’s hip looking so auntie!!

    HOT!!!!

  4. Wow…I really really love it~!

    More, I buy ムード歌謡 ~歌姫昭和名曲集~(初回限定盤)(DVD付) already…enjoying now~!

  5. 氣氛歌謡 Openning’s mood is Good~!

    伊勢佐木町ブルース’s AKINA is so…so Sexy~!

    面影’s arrangement is Excellent~!

  6. Apparently, my copy has arrived. Will listen to the whole thing at one go when I get home from work tonight.

  7. Definitely, Danny Bunny! Oh, I see that the album has entered the Oricon daily chart at No. 17. Not too bad……but I wonder if it will take a plunge after that.

  8. Okay, James, Danny, Eugin, Kenji et al, since I had very little expectation to begin with, the album turned out to be much more enjoyable that I had anticipated. Having said that, I can only treat it as some sort of novelty record.

Looking at the real thing, the artwork actually doesn’t look too bad. HMV JP was kind enough to send a copy of the poster shown above with the CD and I couldn’t help thinking that that would make a better cover. Yeah, she should have vamped it up for the cover.

The opening number, the instrumental track, immediately sets the mood (no pun intended!) and I feel as though I have entered some sort of cheesy nightclub. It also sounds like some sort of music they would play midway through some variety show, so that people can take their toilet break.

The slower numbers definitely grab my attention more: 夢は夜ひらく, 面影 and コモエスタ赤坂 are my favourites. 伊勢佐木町ブルース is fun too, with her come-hither vocals. The rest of the album is kinda instantly forgettable for me and I definitely need to play it a few more times. Then again, I wouldn’t necessarily want to listen to a few of the numbers ever again. Musically, I find it hard to get into this genre. What saved the album, at the end of the day, is Akina’s singing. She’s really made the songs her own. And you can tell that she’s put in (marginally) more effect in this than the last one, Folk Songs Vol. 1.

The DVD is a let-down as well. Instead of showing her singing into the microphone for about 4 minutes, it would be infinitely more interesting to see how the album or the concept was conceived and put together.

By and large, ムード歌謡 ~歌姫昭和名曲集~ is an interesting album. It hasn’t whetted my appetite for Folk Songs Vol. 2 but I am looking forward to her forthcoming concert and the original album to be released in August.

  9. Jerry – Thank you for the review/ opinion. I like reading everybody true opinion becasue I think nothing will change us as Akina’s fan. If you are in this site, it’s likely you have been Akina’s true fan for many years. If you have not say goodbye to Akina, it’s unlikely that you will now.

I must say your opinion is quite a smack down. I knew as soon as I read the line ‘people can take their toilet break.’ 🙂

Anyway, I think it’s great that you get the poster. I think, for the poster, it’s worth it. 🙂

  10. gahh…. I ordered the regular edition by mistake…Y___Y eventhough it’s boring, I wanted to see akina’s face for 4 minutes~

  11. Patrick,

I think Jerry referred “the toilet break” to the instrumental prelude at the beginning of the album, not the actual songs. He said that it was much more enjoyable then he had anticipated, so I don’t think it’s really a smack down.

I agree with you that I prefer honesty than blind love. I can’t wait to form my own impression.

  12. o__O

Perhaps I’ll just make a copy of that poster and print it as a cover for the album and pretend like the original one never came to be.

I really hope she’s planning on doing a photoshoot of this quality for the coming original album’s cover (I’m not expecting much from Folk Song Vol. 2).
